Have you ever wondered what your skin is eating when you put commercial chemicals on it?

Would you eat what you put on your skin?

Hippocrates (the "Father of Medicine") believed and argued that disease was the product of environmental factors, diet and living habits. He also said: "...the natural way is the only way...". BUT what was natural and organic in his day no longer is.

The reason - as you may already know - is to do with manmade chemicals that are present in the food we eat, the toiletries we use on our skins, the perfume we spray on us, the clothes we wear, household products we use and the air we breathe.

As time goes by, more and more side-effects of the use of chemicals are being discovered, some of which are carcinogenic (cancer-causing). Many companies also claim that their products are "natural" or "organic" but when you check the ingredient label of such products the majority of these turn out to contain mainly chemicals and synthetic ingredients.

Become an ingredient detective

Try to find the "milk and honey" that is on the front label of your bottle of soap on the actual ingredient label on the back. Do not be too surprised if you cannot find it there - the reason being there IS probably NO milk and honey in there. For that reason many people are now changing their way of life towards a more CERTIFIED organic one or making their own products.

DO NOT be trustworthy of "approved" or "safe" chemicals and synthetic ingredients in your cosmetics and toiletries. It is a medically recognized fact that our bodies absorb significant amounts of what we put on our skins. What governments of certain countries consider safe may well be banned by another.

With Certified Organic food rapidly becoming the nutrition of choice by the health conscious amongst us, why would you accept any less for your skin?

If you cannot find a product you are looking for that is safe for your body, why not make your own?

On your next trip to the food market, you will need to buy the items below:

  • 1 Avocado (contains Vitamins A, C & E, iron, potassium, niacin & unsaturated fatty acids that stimulate the skin’s production of natural oil)
  • 2 Small bananas (contain amino acid, potassium, and Vitamins A, B, C & E which restore the elasticity of the hair)
  • 1 small bottle olive oil (Hippocrates called olive oil “the great therapeutic”; provides sunscreen protection, absorbing 20% of the sun’s rays)
  • Orange essential oil (soothes and restores the spirit; is a skin conditioner and soothing agent)
  • 1 brick of beeswax and honey from the comb of the honey bee; works as a binder and protective barrier from wind and sun (melting point is 145°F (63°C)
  • Egg
  • Lemon
  • Papaya
  • Rose petals
  • Milk butter

Face - Tropical Citrus Mask

1 ripe banana
1 tsp. Olive oil
1 drop Orange essential oil.

Mix together and smooth over face and leave on for 15 - 20 minutes.  Rinse off with tepid water and smooth on a rich moisturiser.

Face - Fruit Mask for Glowing Skin

1 papaya, chopped
1 lemon, juiced
1 teaspoon of honey
1 blender

Combine all ingredients in the blender, keeping it on a low speed until the mixture becomes a smooth paste.  Pour into a small container.  Apply to freshly washed and dry skin.  Leave mask on for 30 minutes and then rinse with warm water.  You will love how your skin looks and feels!

Hair Mask to Feed your Skin inside and outside

½ ripe avocado (Keep the avocado pit and leave it in a place where it can dry out)
1 tbsp olive oil
½ small banana
1 egg yolk

Gently massage onto hair and scalp. Then stack hair on top of your head and cover with a shower cap or kitchen wrap for 1 hour.  For extra conditioning take a warm shower while waiting or cover shower cap with a warm, thick terrycloth towel.  Then rinse thoroughly with warm water and shampoo as usual.

Honey Orange Lip Balm

2 Tablespoons of chopped beeswax
1/3 cup olive oil (if you prefer a thinner, glossier consistency use more olive oil)
5 drops Orange essential oil
1 ½ Tablespoons of honey

Heat the chopped beeswax until melted in a double boiler  (if you do not have a double boiler use a small pot that can be placed inside of a bigger pot add the beeswax to the small pot and boiling water to the bigger pot).  Remove from heat and slowly pour5 the olive oil into the beeswax and stir to mix.  Then add the hone and the orange oil.  Stir continuously to mix until cool and pour into a clean container with a lid that seals tightly.

Rose Petal Lip Balm

Rose petals
Milk butter

To prevent your lips from drying you can use a ground mixture or rose petals and milk butter.

Avocado & Banana Scrub

Dried avocado pit (to be dried for 3 - 5 days before it can be ground)
½ banana
Olive oil

Grind dried avocado pit until pieces are very fine (placing it in a sealed plastic bag and hammering it will work).  Mix with ½ banana and olive oil to make a thick paste.  Rub gently over skin - do not use too much pressure, as the pit will naturally exfoliate!  Rinse off in a warm shower.
