Tai Chi in Bridgwater, Somerset, UK

If you do not change direction you may end up where you are heading ...

What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi was created by a monk after observing a crane and snake fight; then copying the animals’ yielding & striking movements into martial art form.  The principles & philosophy of Tai Chi are based upon various elements such as Taoism, Yin Yang, Qi and Meridian Channels (Traditional Chinese Medicine).  The forms we practice are Tai Chi Bang and Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi.tai chi figure

Tai Chi Bang was developed by Master Jesse Tsao and Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi was developed by Professor Lin Hou-Sheng, a renowned Qigong Master, scientist and Master Healer in 1979 at the Shanghai Qigong Research Institute in China.  He recognised the health benefits of Tai Chi and developed 18 low impact, slow, gentle, flowing, effortless exercises.  The exercises are simple, easy to learn and can be practiced by any age group.  It can also be adapted and practiced seated by anyone regardless of their ability.  It is a moving meditation cultivating a deep relaxation on the inside.  Please wear loose comfortable clothing and consult your doctor before starting any new exercise routine.

Why would I want to do Tai Chi Bang: Eight Immortal Flute?

Tai Chi Bang is suitable for beginners.  It can be done seated (adapted) or standing and help with:

  • falls prevention
  • carpal tunnel syndrome prevention for computer users & musicians
  • tennis, squash, cricket player conditioning
  • training tendons in wrist for a stronger grip

Why would I want to do Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi?

Shibashi is suitable for beginners & designed to: t

  • improve the general health & wellbeing of the individual. The gentle rocking and stretching movements stimulates the smaller muscles and ligaments thus slowly building up the muscles that protect the joints.  It also improves circulation, balance and digestion.  This is unlike other forms of exercise, which work on the larger muscle groups that may put the body under stress.
  • The chest exercises & controlled breathing are good for lung conditions and asthma.  Abdominal breathing has the ability to alter/lengthen brain waves which in turn releases stress/anger/tension relaxing the individual.  The overall effect is to reduce mental stress and physical tension carried in the muscles.
  • When the body is relaxed it enters the tranquillity stage during which it is able to start healing itself and the right side of the brain will start to balance your yin and yang, adjusting the level of your hormones, circulation, respiration, digestion, blood pressure and heartbeat.

Traditional Chinese Medicine recognizes and works with this Energy known as “ki” in Japan, “chi” or “qi” in China and “prana” in India. It’s present in all living things essential to well-being of people, animals & plants.

Acupuncture, Tai Chi, Yoga and Reiki are all based on this energy. Click here to book a Tai Chi class if you live in Somerset, UK area.

Relax and de-stress the natural way by reconnecting your body, mind and spirit. Through circular, flowing Tai Chi movements ANYONE regardless of physical stamina or ability can benefit as Tai Chi improves balance, coordination, memory, reduces blood pressure, reduces anxiety and stress.

Philosophy of Tai Chi

The principles and philosophy of Tai Chi which originated as a fighting martial art is based upon various elements such as Taoism, Yin Yang, Qi and Meridian or Energy Channels (Traditional Chinese Medicine).

How your BODY could benefit from Tai Chi

Regardless of your physical ability or stamina, anyone of any age can participate in Tai Chi. Even if you tire easily or have mobility problems an adapted version can be done whilst seated. Tai Chi will improve balance, coordination, concentration, strenghten joint flexibility, and muscle strength, benefits arthritis sufferers, reduce blood pressure.

How your MIND could benefit from Tai Chi

The slow, abdominal (diaphragmatic) breathing technique alters (lengthens) brain waves which reduces anxiety and stress. Also, you need to focus mentally on doing the Tai Chi movements and that is different from conventional exercises where the mind gets left behind or completely ignored when for instance being in a gym watching television whilst working out or when walking with a friend just chatting, which is beneficial too, but in such activities your own awareness and connection between body and mind are lost.

How your SPIRIT could benefit from Tai Chi

This is something to be experienced but effects of enjoyment will be noticed even after a single session. With regular practice you may experience mental quietness and become more intune with your own spiritual connection through meditation as some of the movements involve standing (or seated) meditation which also calms and clears the mind and spirit leaving you to take on a more balanced view of nature and everything else around you.
